Ann Arbor's food and drink scene has had a genuinely fun year, and if you haven't been paying close attention, you might not realize just how much is new. Walk into 200 S. Main and you'll find two great nights out stacked on top of each other: upstairs, Echelon Kitchen & Bar is turning out wood-fired, vegetable-forward plates under Chef Joseph VanWagner, and downstairs, tucked behind the Washington Street entrance, Huna is pouring rum cocktails in a dim, tropical tiki den built by the same team. One address, two completely different vibes.
That's kind of the theme of 2026 downtown: instead of spreading out, a lot of great new spots have tucked themselves into buildings that already had something going on, which means there's a good chance you've walked right past a few of these without noticing. Time to fix that.
What's Opened So Far in 2026
Here's everything new to try, in the order it showed up:
Espy Cafe kicked things off in January on West Huron. It's a worker-owned neighborhood cafe with a full kitchen behind it, serving sourdough pancakes, seasonal salads, sandwiches and soups, and coffee roasted in-house from beans sourced around the world. The espresso setup alone signals they're here to stay.
Huna followed in February, tucked in the basement at 200 South Main. It's exactly the late-night hangout South Main was missing: a dim, tropical tiki bar pouring rum cocktails and classic tiki drinks with an Echelon twist, open later than the restaurant upstairs.
The Ranch Honky Tonk rode into 122 W. Washington in March with live country bands, cold beer, and Southwestern-inspired comfort food. Think Elotes Queso, Carne Asada Fries, Sonoran Dogs, and a standout birria burrito. Horse-saddle bar seats, animal taxidermy, and spotlit portraits of Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton set the mood. It's easily one of the most fun new additions downtown.
Hummus Express opened in April on West Eisenhower, giving the Colonnade shopping center a fast-casual Mediterranean spot with build-your-own bowls, wraps, and pitas with falafel, shawarma, and house-made hummus, Chipotle-style.
Shibam Coffee Co. soft-opened in June at 414 South Main, bringing Yemeni coffee to the neighborhood along with traditional specialties like Mufawar, a spiced Yemeni milk tea with cardamom, and Sana'ani tea.
Aperitivo also soft-opened in June, right around the corner at 200 S. Ashley. It's an Italian-inspired cocktail and wine bar built around the pre-dinner aperitivo tradition of charcuterie, olives, and nuts and classic Italian cocktails.
That's six new places to explore this year with plenty to keep any night out interesting for the rest of 2026.
What's Coming Soon
The excitement doesn't stop there. A couple more spots are already on the way:
Bev's Bagels is expected to open in September, moving into a space between Spencer and RoosRoast at 115 East Liberty Street. This one's a treat! Bev's built its name in Detroit with hand-rolled, kettle-boiled bagels and creative schmears, and we're thrilled they're bringing that same energy to a storefront in Ann Arbor with a shop nearly double the size of their original location.
Orijin Bakery is set to open later this summer at 617 E. Liberty Street, near Sava's downtown. It's an artisan bakery from the team behind The Boro and The Dixboro Project, with pastry chef Jin Capobianco Gorian leading the way on laminated pastries, custom cakes, seasonal tarts, and naturally leavened breads. If The Boro's following is any indication, this one's worth getting excited about.
If You Haven't Eaten Downtown Since Spring, You're in for a Treat
If your usual rotation still runs through the same handful of spots from a couple years ago, now's a great time to shake things up. Grab dinner at Echelon and finish the night with a drink at Huna without ever leaving the building. Swing by Espy for coffee and sourdough pancakes on West Huron. Try a spiced Yemeni tea at Shibam. Two-step your way through a plate of birria fries at The Ranch. There's a genuinely exciting stretch of new energy running through downtown right now, and it's worth exploring.
